Rewal Residence

Year : 1973-1975

Location: New Delhi

Description:

The Rewal Residence divides its narrow plot of just 500 square yards vertically to create two independent units where privacy and harmony carried equal consideration.

With the architect and his family occupying one and his parents the other, each house has been given a separate entry and front garden across a tight offset of five metres and  allows transition from one unit to the other at the rear. The ground floor of the architect’s unit fluidly combines a partly double-height living area with a dining space, small kitchen and bedroom. Cantilevered stairs in concrete lead to a mezzanine, which tucked in a room for his children. While this area was glazed in the other house, it was left open in his. Two bedrooms on the first floor completed the layout of the smallest of his residential designs.
